The Manitoba Society of Orthopaedic Technologists is the local chapter of the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists. The MSOT was founded in 1978. Currently there are more than 20 registered members in Manitoba.
An Orthopaedic Technologist is a parmedically trained person who performs their duties under the direction of a physician. They collaberate with other members of the health care team, primarily in the orthopaedic department and occasionally in other areas such as plastic surgery and emergency departments. The Orthopaedic Technologist is responsible for cast application, adjustment, removal and modification of casts as needed. They are involved in the application/removal of dressings and wound assessment, as well as the appropriate removal of sutures, staples, K-wires, pins and external fixators. They can measure, fit, and instruct patients with orthopaedic devices (braces, boots), ambulatory aids (crutches, canes, walkers), fabrication and application of splints, slings, dressings. The Orthopaedic Technologist educates the patient and their care givers on the injury and its care and management.
To become a Registered Orthopaedic Technologist (RT Orthopaed), a person must be sponsored by an Orthopaedic Surgeon and must attain a minimum of 850 practical hours while employed in the field. The person may then attempt the national registry examinations (written; oral and practical).
In Manitoba, Orthopaedic Technologists work at various hospitals, clinics and health care facilities: Brandon Regional Health Centre, Boundary Trails Health Centre, Concordia Hospital, Grace Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, Misericordia Health Centre, Pan Am Clinic and Seven Oaks General Hospital.
